Remembering Bands That Scared Me: Vol. 1...
I got to see the Cows quite a bit around 1991/1992. The first show I saw them at was the 400 bar and the crowd freaked me out. The was no demographic whatsoever. Old, young, black, skinhead, punk, country bumkin, EVERYONE. When the Cows took stage it was like the crowd was afraid of the band yet loved them at the same time. I always referred to them as "G.G. Allin lite".
When I saw them at First Ave. the singer Shannon Selberg came out completely nude with shaving cream on his groinal axis. Now, picture a scrawny Willem Defoe(Wild at Heart era) with a drawn on mustache nude as hell screaming away & gyrating like Mick Jagger. It was pretty terrifying.
The Cows were definitely unique and pretty creepy too.
